Clearing 2024: Key trends and insights for Results Day preparation
15/08/2024
As Results Day approaches, significant trends and insights are emerging that are worth considering as the admissions cycle unfolds. According to HEPI's recent analysis, the number of UK 18-year-olds applying to university is the second highest on record, with 321,410 applications—a slight increase from last year. However, the overall application rate has dipped marginally, likely influenced by the ongoing cost-of-living crisis. Despite these financial concerns, students remain focused on securing university places, seeking detailed information on financial support and employment prospects post-graduation.
A significant change this year is the increase in the number of students holding university offers, with 91% of the UK’s 18-year-olds having secured a place, increasing by 89% from 2023. This rise is particularly notable among higher tariff universities, where offer rates have jumped from 56.5% to 60.2%. London continues to take the lead in university participation, boasting the highest application rate among UK regions. In contrast, areas like the Northeast and Southwest have seen declines in applicant numbers for the third consecutive year, highlighting regional disparities in higher education engagement.
Interestingly, this year’s Clearing is shaping up to be more dynamic, with a substantial number of vacancies still available at leading universities. A recent survey revealed nearly 3,900 undergraduate vacancies at Russell Group universities, a notable increase from 2,000 at this time last year. This suggests that more school leavers may secure places at prestigious institutions, especially if predictions of lower A-level grades lead to more lenient entry requirements. However, competition remains intense for the most selective courses, with UCAS advising students to thoroughly research their options and plan ahead.
Universities have responded to the heightened interest in Clearing by providing an array of resources to guide students and parents/carers through the process. From dedicated Clearing and Results Day guides, Clearing tips, FAQs, and webinars to campus tours and Clearing Visit Days, institutions are doing their utmost to support students in making informed decisions. Engagement with Clearing content is also up significantly (Clearing article views are up by 40% and Clearing searches are up by +28% across the Student Room), indicating that students are proactively preparing for results day. With this wealth of information and support available, students are better equipped than ever to navigate the complexities of Clearing 2024.
